United Methodists and Muslim neighbors gathered Oct. 13 at Barrington United Methodist Church for the annual Methodist-Muslim Dinner, themed “Hope in Action: Standing Together Against Hate and Division.” Keynote speakers emphasized shared values of compassion, dignity and service, challenging participants to build lasting relationships across faith traditions and put their commitment to peace into action.

The Northern Illinois Conference Committee on Christian Unity and Interreligious Relationships is offering registration reimbursement for NIC clergy, laity and seminary students attending the National Workshop on Christian Unity. Funding is limited and will be awarded first come, first served.

Churches Call For Peace in a Divided World

Christians from diverse traditions gathered Sept. 30 at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago for an ecumenical service calling for peace amid division, violence and political mistrust. Through worship, shared prayers and conversation, participants affirmed the importance of strengthening relationships across denominational lines and witnessing to peace in Chicago and around the world.

Ecumenism Metro Chicago to Mark International Day of Peace

“Blessed Are the Peacemakers,” an ecumenical prayer service, will gather Christians from different traditions in a common act of prayer on Sept. 30, in solidarity with the International Day of Peace. Ecumenism Metro Chicago, of which Northern Illinois Conference is a member, is sponsoring the event.

United Methodists and Muslims broke bread and barriers at the Muslim-Methodist Iftar (breaking the Ramadan fast), March 3 at the Islamic Center of Wheaton. The Northern Illinois Conference and the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago offer these dinners annually to build relationships and affirm common values.

Leaders of fourteen church bodies in the Chicago area who came together on Jan. 24 for the World Day of Prayer put faith into practice by urging the federal government to stay in the Paris Agreement on climate change and pressing Illinois legislators to order the removal of lead drinking water pipes from the state.
