Becoming the Beloved Community is a four-hour workshop that conveys not only facts and essential knowledge about race and racism but also seeks to help us experience some of the harm and hurt racial prejudice has caused.
Event is limited to 25 people. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Becoming the Beloved Community-How to Talk About Race in America, is the Northern Illinois Conference CCORR's anti-racism workshop. It presents essential facts about the impact of race on both people of color and whites in the United States, touching on issues of inequality in wealth, opportunity, how individuals and groups are perceived and treated differently, and what role the Church has played in both fighting and supporting racism. But it also strives to help people go beyond the facts to the feelings behind them, feelings of fear, hope, anguish, longing and more. It presents ways to feel beyond the facts by sharing stories and by conversing in honest, safe, mutually respectful ways.
Even though the workshop focuses on issues of race, this emphasis on sharing will introduce ways all churches can become more closely knit as its members share their own lives more deeply with each other. This will help churches become more active, intentional communities, honoring Christ's life and teachings not only about fighting inequality but other forces that prevent us from seeing all people and the earth as God's beloved creations.
