Showing Appreciation for Pastors Throughout October

Posted: October 5 2026 at 02:13 PM
Thank You

While pastors deserve our gratitude and support all year long, October is set aside as a special opportunity for congregations and individuals to intentionally recognize and appreciate their ministry. Throughout October, consider finding meaningful ways to say thank you for the many ways they serve their congregations, communities and the wider church.

Pastors give generously of themselves throughout the year, serving their congregations, communities and the wider church in countless ways. Their ministry often includes long hours, difficult conversations, joyful celebrations and quiet moments of care that may never be seen by the wider congregation.

Throughout October, consider finding meaningful ways to say thank you (and look for ways to continue that appreciation throughout the year).

Write a personal note

A handwritten card or letter can be one of the most meaningful gifts. Share a specific way your pastor has made a difference in your life, helped you grow in faith or supported you during a difficult time. A personal story or specific example can mean more than a general “thank you.”

Pray for your pastor

Commit to praying regularly for your pastor, their family and their ministry. Ask if there are particular areas where they would appreciate prayer, and let them know you are praying for them.

Give the gift of time

One of the greatest gifts a congregation can offer is help. Volunteer for a ministry, take responsibility for a task or step forward when your church needs someone to lead. Sharing the work of ministry allows pastors to focus on their calling and reminds them they are not serving alone.

Share a meal

Invite your pastor and their family to dinner, bring a meal to their home or offer a gift card to a favorite restaurant. Be mindful of their schedule and family needs, making the invitation a gift rather than another obligation.

Give a thoughtful gift

If your congregation gives a gift, make it personal. Consider a favorite restaurant, bookstore or coffee shop gift card, tickets to an event, or something connected to your pastor’s interests. A group might also contribute toward something that supports rest, recreation or continuing education.

Encourage rest

Pastors give much of themselves to their congregations. Congregations can show appreciation by respecting days off, vacation time and family time. Share ministry responsibilities rather than allowing the pastor to carry every task, and encourage healthy boundaries that support long-term ministry.

Celebrate their ministry

Create a photo album, slideshow or collection of messages from members sharing favorite memories and words of gratitude. Children and youth can contribute artwork or notes. These personal reminders of the lives touched through ministry can become treasured gifts.

Ask how you can help

Instead of guessing what your pastor needs, ask. Is there a ministry task that could be shared? Is there a project that has been sitting on the to-do list? Is there a way the congregation can better support the pastor’s ministry? Sometimes the most meaningful appreciation is practical help.

Show appreciation by living the mission

Perhaps one of the greatest ways to appreciate a pastor is to put faith into action. Participate in worship, serve your neighbors, welcome new people, care for one another and engage in the ministry of your congregation and community. When pastors see the people they serve living out their faith, it is a powerful expression of appreciation.

Pastor Appreciation Month is a reminder that gratitude should not be limited to one day or even one month. Throughout October, take opportunities to let your pastor know that their ministry is seen, valued and appreciated.

And when October ends, keep saying thank you throughout the year.
