Day of Conversation – “The United Methodist Church: Into the Future”

  • 09:00 AM
  • Grace UMC, 300 E Gartner Rd, Naperville, IL

Registration has reached capacity and is closed for this event on Sept. 16 but there will be additional opportunities to gather around topics related to “The Way Forward” in the future. We also plan to videotape portions of the event which will be made available.

You are invited to a critical conversation in today’s life of our church. On Saturday, September 16, from 9 am to 3 pm, Bishop Sharon Zimmerman Rader will lead us as we discuss who we are as part of the body of Christ, specifically The United Methodist Church.

We will be discussing questions of identity, purpose, and mission as we think about the challenges that our differences around human sexuality present us at this time in The United Methodist Church.

This is not an educational event on homosexuality but on ecclesiology – the study of the mission of the church. Laity and clergy alike are invited.

We will meet at Grace UMC in Naperville. I look forward to seeing you there. ~Bishop Sally Dyck

$12 (Includes light breakfast and lunch)

*Please note that registration will close once capacity is reached.

Childcare will be provided for children ages 4 and under at the cost of $5 per child or $10 per family.
Please note that lunch is not provided for children and parents of infants must provide diapers/wipes, bottles and blankets.

We also recommend bringing a favorite toy for infant children. Contact Laura Lopez by email at to register for childcare or if you have more questions.

unitybookThe book Unity of the Church and Human Sexuality, will help us guide our conversation. As part of that conversation, we will reflect on the questions that the Council of Bishops has crafted for the church as we prepare for the Commission’s report:

  • In our diverse and global existence, what is the shared mission/purpose of the Church?
  • Is there a proactive way for us to live together in our differences that doesn’t presume that we will resolve our differences?  What would it be?
  • What might be a form of unity that would empower us living together?
  • What is our witness and what can be our witness to the world in relation to our differences?

More details to come…
