The Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters is requesting that each Annual Conference provide feedback to a draft of a General Book of Discipline.
General Conference 2012 mandated the Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters with clarifying which paragraphs in Part VI of the Book of Discipline (Part VI: Organization and Administration) apply for all regions of the world and which paragraphs may be adapted by central conferences. The Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters submitted a “Draft of a General Book of Discipline” to General Conference 2016. The draft is a partial fulfillment as it covers only chapters 1-4 and 6 of Part VI. General Conference 2016 received the draft with appreciation and confirmed that a consultation shall be held in all annual conferences of The United Methodist Church worldwide during the year 2017.
The NIC General and Jurisdictional Conference Delegation is hosting a discussion, facilitated by Bishop Sharon Rader in order to gather information on this draft.
All are invited to attend on October 21 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The location is First UMC in Lombard (155 S. Main). It is an open meeting for anyone in the conference to give input on the Global Book of Discipline draft.
Our agenda will be:
9:00-9:20 – Gathering and devotions
9:20-9:25 – Overview of our task
9:25-11:50 – Discussion of the Global BoD
11:50 – Closing
There is internet in the church, so we will attempt to live stream the conversation on our delegation Facebook page.
The delegation will come prepared on October 21 by reading the Introduction and your chapter that you agreed to (or are assigned to) read. We will focus on the following three questions:
- What is essential for the worldwide connection of The United Methodist Church that is missing in this draft?
- Where is this draft too detailed and in need of further prioritization of that which is truly essential?
- What inconsistencies or inaccuracies are found in the draft and are thus in need of correction?
Please keep these questions in mind as you read your section.
