umcrbannerWe are pleased to announce a new partnership to help fill your church’s resource needs.

From filmstrips and flannel board packets to VHS tapes and DVDs, the Northern Illinois Conference Media Resource Center (MRC) has navigated the transitions in technology and reinvented itself over the past 35-40 years. With changes in technology, conference space, budget and personnel, it was once again time to reexamine what it means to provide media resources for the local church.

About 50 or 12% of the churches across the conference used the resource center over the past year checking out around 500 items. The center houses thousands of items including many outdated VHS tapes. After much research and talking with other conferences, Illinois Great Rivers offered to partner with us giving Northern Illinois individuals and churches access to its United Media Resource Center (UMRC), which is located the conference office in Springfield. Most of our resources will be sent there and will be included in their online catalog. The Director is Jill Stone.

“We see this as a win-win situation,” said Paul Black, IGRC director of communication ministries, which oversees the UMRC. “Under the agreement, Northern Illinois Conference will be providing funds which will allow for the purchasing of more resources while we provide the administrative overhead that we are already paying with no additional out-of-pocket operating costs.”

Director of Connectional Ministries Rev. Arlene Christopherson says this is a great opportunity to be good stewards of our current resources and continue to provide a service to our local churches. “We will pay $6,000 per year to share the media resource center with Illinois Great Rivers and plan to create an advisory board to meet twice a year to preview and share ideas and needs for new inventory,” said Christopherson. “We thank retired MRC Director Susan Gieseler for continuing part-time to help transfer, pack and ship our stock. We are grateful for her many years of service in managing the center.”

The new service will be free excluding return postage and NIC churches and congregations will also be able to subscribe to the UMRC monthly e-newsletter, highlighting new acquisitions and featured resources. Completion of the transition is targeted for January 9, 2017.

The online catalog will be available to browse on the NIC website and we will share that link as soon as its available. For more information or questions please contact UMRC Director Jill Stone at: 217-529-2744 or by email at: or .
