Welcome to the Rockford District

Lisa Kruse-Safford

Rev. Lisa Kruse-Safford

Who is My Neighbor? Well, if you were in the Rockford District – you could answer that in a variety of ways. Your neighbor may live in a small town, on a farm, or in the city. Your neighbor may be a seed corn salesman, a stay-at-home mom, or a retail employee. Your neighbor may be an octogenarian, a middle-aged, or a college student. Your neighbor may be a recent Hispanic immigrant, an African-American, or Caucasian of Swedish descent.

Truly, the Rockford District has it all:  a big city full of both wonders and challenges; small towns that give great understanding to the word, “community”; and miles of corn and bean fields!  But even more, the Rockford District is full of faithful disciples of Jesus Christ who gather to proclaim the glory of God and who seek to live out their faith in love and service to whoever their neighbors may be.

You are cordially invited to visit our churches to worship, to grow in Christian discipleship and fellowship, and to engage in mission and outreach work. In these loving and welcoming faith communities, you will meet people of open hearts, open minds, and open doors.

In Christ's grace and peace,

Rev. Lisa Kruse-Safford Rockford District Superintendent

About the Rockford District

We are one of the six districts of the Northern Illinois Annual Conference, located in its northwest region. Our district boundary goes all the way to the Wisconsin border on the north and Savanna and Galena nearby Mississippi River on the west. While the district is mostly town and country, it is a home of the third largest city in Illinois.

Our district has 67 churches, as well as three United Methodist Church-affiliated agencies: Rosecrance, Wesley Willows, and Rockford Urban Ministries. Our churches are beautiful and strong, served by 54 clergy, who seek to be healthy, happy, and holy in their body, mind, and spirit. In strong partnership with each other, our clergy and laity are committed to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Bishop pastoral statement on racism and violence

On August 12 a national tragedy occurred (again) when supremacist and neo-Nazi groups went to Charlottesville, VA and gave rise to violence, destruction, and death. We are grieving for the individuals involved but even more so, what these acts of racism and violence say about us as a people. I encouraged, along with most religious…

Summer Reading

Each active clergy serving local churches should have received a copy of the book Unity of the Church and Human Sexuality put together by the General Board of Higher Education at either the clergy session or annual conference. If you still need to pick up your free book, contact your District Office. Bishop Sally Dyck commends this…
