About the DeKalb District

The DeKalb District is a vital and vibrant part of the Conference with many small towns that celebrate historical roots while moving into the future. The city of DeKalb is the proud home of Northern Illinois University, while the surrounding countryside boasts some of the best agricultural lands in the United States.

The District consists of 66 local churches served by 53 dedicated pastors (2017 data) and 13,653 faithful members (2015 data). The strengths of our congregations are many and varied. We feed the hungry, physically and spiritually (daily, weekly, or monthly community meal programs); we nurture our children, emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually (after school programs, cooking classes, art classes); we serve our senior citizens with both practical resources and opportunities for fellowship. We are a people determined to follow Jesus, caring and sharing, and making a difference in our communities and the world.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

By Bishop Sally Dyck Recently a former parishioner whom I hadn’t heard from for at least 20 years called me.  She suffered then but her symptoms are more infrequent and less severe, having received new treatments and developed life skills to help her.  She has become an advocate for awareness of mental health for the…

Host a community conversation

Jesus’ ministry was characterized, even by his critics, in terms of who he ate with—the prestigious (Simon the Pharisee) and the marginalized (the woman who washed his feet with her tears). And they were at the same dinner!  Who Jesus ate with—and who we eat with—matters! That’s why on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 I am…

Bishop designates Global AIDS Fund for AC offering

The Northern Illinois Conference HIV/AIDS Task Force is deeply grateful that Bishop Sally Dyck chose the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund (UMGAF) as the recipient of the Bishop’s Appeal for 2017. Each congregation is asked to take a special offering or to do some type of special fundraising to help support the appeal. In years…

Outpouring of support for Ottawa

When an EF3 tornado barreled through the small communities of Ottawa and Naplate in north-central Illinois on Feb. 28, there was an immediate response to help from United Methodists. The Rev. Cheri Stewart of Ottawa’s First United Methodist Church says it’s never more evident that the church really is a compassionately caring Christian community than…
