NEWS UPDATE: Antioch UMC youth forego food, help children in need

By Nikki Georgia, UMC of Antioch, Coordinator of Youth MinistryPictured: Nikki Georgia, Phil Georgia, Steven Farrell, Zack Moser,
Autumn Pfingsten, Ben Tompkins, Jessica Ploss, Gwen Moser, Jessica
Shannon, Alex Torres, Emily Welsh
Youth from UMC of Antioch tasted hunger, fasting for 30 hours, in order to raise money for the life saving work World Vision does in caring for children in need around the world. We exceeded our goal, raising $2,526.41, enough to care for 7 children for a year!Though the final number won't be determined until we get the last money turned in Sunday, we know that we reached our goal of $2,160. Our youth group started doing the famine in 2002. It is a life-changing, eye-opening event because the youth, through games, discussion, and videos, get to briefly experience the challenges of poverty in different countries around the world. By fasting, drinking only water and juice, we experience real hunger pangs and have a greater appreciation for the everyday bounty of our lives. The event also empowers the youth because they know that for every $360 they raise it will provide food, clean water, medical care, and educational opportunities to a child for a year. The youth know that they literally saved the lives of 6 children through their fundraising efforts this year. During our time together we also pray and study the Bible. This year our Bible study revolved around John Wesley's call to "Gain all you can, save all you can, give all you can." We talked about the problem of hyper-consumerism in our culture and not getting pulled into that mentality and how by living simply we can use more of our resources to help the poor.

NEWS UPDATE: Implementing new website at Polo UMC

By Greg MorhardtPlease see our new website, http://www.poloumc.com. We were looking for a way that multiple administrators could access and easily update our website. We had been using one volunteer who had been doing a good job but was limited in a couple of the requests that we were interested in. One was having the ability to upload the sermon audio and another was to have the current bulletin and newsletters available. The on-line calendar was an added benefit of using this service and has really worked out well. Community Spice caters to churches and has a nice number of pre-made templates as well as a large image library and on-line assistance. We signed up for the free 30 day trial and pretty much had our entire site up and running in that time. We are still in the process of polishing the site and seeing how the congregation wants to use it. I am sure this will be an ongoing project but one that is made easier by such good on-line tools.

By Merrie Buntmbunt@umcnic.orgThe NIC has closed the books on 2009 and I am happy to report that apportionment giving for the year totaled $6,021,235. Year-end receipts from December and January were $1,427,680. There were 205 (or 55% of) churches that paid 100% of their 2009 apportionments an increase of one church from 2008. We know this year was especially difficult for many churches to make 100% apportionment giving a reality. We are exceedingly grateful for every dollar given in support of our shared mission and ministry. Every effort strengthens our connectional church as we work together for the transformation of the world. We celebrate with the following Churches that paid 100% of their 2009 Apportionment:*indicates more than 100% givenAurora DistrictAurora: FirstAurora: Nueva VidaAurora: WesleyChannahonDowners Grove: FirstGreen GardenHinsdaleJoliet: GraceJoliet: HopeKanevilleLemontLisle: FaithLockport: ChristManhattanMinookaMorris: First*Naperville: GraceNaperville: WesleyNew LenoxOrland Park: FaithOswego: Good ShepherdSandwich: UnitedWheaton: AldersgateWheaton: GaryWilmingtonWilton Center Federated ChurchWinfield: CommunityWoodridgeAurora: South Asian*Bolingbrook: Crossroads of FaithNaperville Korean*Chicago Northwestern DistrictChicago: Berry MemorialChicago: BroadwayChicago: Church of the Three CrossesChicago: Edison ParkChicago: El Redentor del CalvarioWheeling: First KoreanChicago: Granville AvenueChicago: Humboldt ParkChicago: Irving ParkChicago: MandellChicago: Parish of the Holy CovenantChicago: Ravenswood FellowshipChicago: United Church of Rogers ParkChicago: West RidgeDeerfield: ChristElmwood ParkEvanston: EmmanuelEvanston: FirstEvanston: HemenwayMaywood: NeighborhoodNorthbrookOak Park: Euclid AvenueOak Park: FirstOak Park: St. John'sRiver ForestSkokie: CentralMelrose Park: CosmopolitanChicago: Adalberto MemorialChicago: First VietnameseChicago: African CommunityChicago: Indo Pak*Chicago: Grace KoreanChicago Southern DistrictChicago: Clair ChristianChicago: EnglewoodChicago: GorhamChicago: Hartzell MemorialChicago: Morgan ParkChicago: New GreshamChicago: GreenstoneChicago: St. MarkChicago: South ShoreChicago: TrinityChicago: Union AvenueChicago: United Church of Hyde ParkChicago: WesleyCicero: Wesley*Hazel Crest: CommunityPark Forest: Grace United ProtestantThorntonDeKalb DistrictBrookvilleChanaColetaCortlandCrestonDeKalb: FirstDixon: FirstEarlvilleElkhornErieEsmondFentonHarmonHerbert: DavisKingstonKirkland: FirstLa Salle: Grace*LelandLeonLighthouseLyndonMaltaMalta: Northwest MaltaMaple Park: GraceMendota: FirstMendota: ZionMount Morris: DisciplesNorwayPolo: FirstPrinceton: FirstProphetstown*ReynoldsRochelleSeneca: FirstSerenaSterling: WesleyStewardSuydamSycamore*TampicoTriumphWalnutWatermanElgin DistrictAddison: Good SamaritanAldenAlgonquin: ChristAntiochArlington Heights: First*BarringtonBensenville: FirstBurlingtonCarpentersville: TrinityCrystal Lake: FirstDes Plaines: FirstElgin: EpworthElgin: FirstElgin: WesleyElmhurst: Faith EvangelicalHampshire: ZionHebronInglesideLake Bluff: GraceLibertyvilleMarengoMcHenry: FirstMount HopeMount Prospect: TrinityWinthrop Harbor: North PrairiePalatine: FirstElgin: CornerstoneRingwoodSchaumburg: Our Redeemer'sSchaumburg: Our Saviour'sWauconda: Federated ChurchWaukegan: Living FaithWinthrop HarborWoodstock: FirstBeach Park: York HouseZion: MemorialBarrington: YangMoon KoreanWaukegan: San PabloRockford DistrictAfolkey: BethelApple RiverArgo FayBlaineBurrittCedarvilleDakota - Rock GroveDavis JunctionDurandFair HavenForrestonGalenaGerman ValleyHickory GroveHunterKentLanarkMcConnellMilledgevilleNew MilfordOrangevilleOwen CenterPearl City: FirstPecatonicaPoplar GroveRed OakRock CityRockford: AldersgateRockford: BethanyRockford: Beth EdenRockford: Brooke RoadRockford: ChristRockford: Christ the CarpenterRockford: EvansRocktonRoscoeScales MoundShirlandStockton: WesleyThomsonVan BrocklinWarrenWillowWinnebagoChemung
